Our training and consulting services are available on a donation or a pay for service basis. We can consult on everything about your dog, or prospective dog, and save you valuable time, money, and aggravation. Dont expect canned information or sugar coated platitudes, just straight information.
We are extremely well qualified to solve behavior issues and breed selection issues.
Our training services on the farm are offered on a boarding school basis only. We totally manage and train the dog for a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of 8 weeks. The two week course is a very basic get it under control course. We teach the dog not to jump up on people, to walk nicely on a leash without pulling, to sit, and stay. The dog is introduced to the down command and introduced to the come command. At the end of the first two weeks the owner finds they have a platform to stand on to continue training his/her dog. Naturally in this short time the dog will only work on a leash and needs reminders. The most important item in the course is that the dog has learned how to learn.
We do not beat the dogs or use harsh methods. Neither do we allow the dog to avoid proper behavior. We are strong believers in two principals.
- The principle of inevitability
- The principle of sufficient force
Simply stated this means that if it takes 5 minutes to learn an exercise that is great, if it takes 5 hours that is also great, but it will be learned before the session is over. A training session is never begun when we dont have time to finish the session, no matter how long it takes.
The principle of sufficient force goes hand in hand with the principle of inevitability. Whatever it takes to teach the animal the lesson is what it takes. We begin with a flat collar, then if necessary a training collar, then a head halter, finally, if necessary, a pinch collar. We prefer to use positive reinforcement, but the bottom line is that the dog must do as we ask.
This fair and firm process earns the dogs respect. Our students love us and we love them. It is not a kindness to refuse to train a dog, it is the ultimate cruelty. An untrained dog often becomes a rescue subject. We love our dogs and teach them to be good members of society.
