Have you ever noticed how prevalent “Guy Gangs” are in nature? The elephants keep the babies of both sexes around until the males begin to reach sexual maturity, then the males are chased off to prevent inbreeding and form adolescent Gangs. Male lions all hang out together, the females also hang out together with their young. Baboon males form marauding bands. Human males are the same way, from teenage to death, they love to hang out with the guys.
We find the same thing with dogs and horses. The stallions like to hang out with each other, not necessarily in the same paddock, but close. Just yesterday we put a young stallion out with his hay at the far corner of the paddock. A pony was over he fence about 100’ away. The stallion hung out with his pony friend, an aged gelding, for hours without venturing to the other end of the pen to eat. When he was put into the barn he was famished, but not hungry enough to leave his buddy. The same horse was put into a paddock the other side of the pony today, he’s happily staying near and munching on his hay.
The male dogs love each other. When the females aren’t present the guys always play, and I have male terriers. They roughhouse, shoulder bump, chase and generally have a good time. When the girls are there, and there is a difference when the girls are spayed or entire, the boys have to posture and be macho.
There is absolutely no point to this article, I just found it interesting how alike many males are.
