First step is making sure your puppy or dog is healthy. Has the dog been
wormed? If not a simple wormer like Nemex is probably in order. Non-toxic,
easy, and tastes good.
Next item is food. Dogs are carnivores, as such their main food should be
raw meat. We prefer the Biologically appropriate raw food diet, but recognize
that many people prefer a dry diet. If you wish to use commercial food please
follow these guidelines. Meat or poultry, not by products, must be the first
ingredient. NO SOY, NO CORN, NO WHEAT OR CORN GLUTEN, NO ANIMAL DIGEST. READ
THE LABEL. We prefer food with natural preservatives. Depending on age your
dog will be fed one to two times a day. Give the dog his food, leave it down
for 15 minutes, then remove it. If he hasn’t finished give him ½ that
quantity for his next meal. Same routine, 15 minutes then it goes away. Continue
the same routine until he cleans up his food within the 15 minutes, then begin
increasing the quantity until he is up to a normal amount. The proper amount
for your dog is enough to keep him in good flesh but not fat. Until 6 to 8
months of age feed twice a day, after that feed one time per day, at your convenience.
Always have clean, fresh water available.
The steps to housebreaking are very easy. If followed carefully for about
two weeks your dog will be clean for the rest of his life. It is well worth
the effort.
Buy a crate or indoor kennel suitable for the size the puppy is now, not
what size he will end up. Replace the crate as the puppy grows. The basic principle
is that dogs, being den animals, do not want to soil their den. The routine
is simple.
The dog sleeps in his crate on cloth bedding, not on papers, unless he eats
the cloth, then remove it. He goes to bed when the family does. Before going
to bed he is taken out in the yard to relieve himself. Go with him so you know
he has gone and so you get the opportunity to congratulate him. Bring him in
and into the crate he goes. He may fuss the first night but will shortly settle
in, don’t make the mistake of letting him out of the crate while he is
fussing. During the night when he awakes and is restless he probably has to
go out. Usually this middle of the night out only continues until they are
about 3 months old. First thing, and I do mean first thing, take the dog outside.
If he is small enough to carry then carry him rather than letting him walk.
Wait with him while he relieves himself, praise calmly and take him inside
with you. Keep him on a leash and with you, don’t just turn him loose
in the house. Keep him with you on leash while in the house. If you can’t
supervise him he goes back in the box or in the yard, not loose around the
house. This routine continues until he is about 3 months old.
Always make sure the dog has access to clean water, except overnight in his
crate.
Before bed take the dog outside, praise for elimination, and bring back in.
Make sure his bedding is clean, he has his raw beef bone, and put him to bed.
You will find, if you follow this routine carefully, that you have a clean
dog within two weeks. It is your job to make sure the dog is healthy, happy,
and always supervised.
A NOTE ABOUT TOYS. RAW LARGE BEEF BONES, NO OTHER CHEWIES. NO RAWHIDE, NO
TENNIS BALLS, NO ROPE TOYS. DOGS CAN CHOKE TO DEATH ON TENNIS BALLS AND RAWHIDES.
WATCH TREATS, SAME RULES AS FOOD NO SOY, NO CORN, NO WHEAT GLUTEN, ONLY AMERICAN
MADE.
